Land Crossing to Lebanon

I plan to come to Lebanon this Summer by land. I will be in Turkey this Summer visiting friends and family, then I plan to get a bus to Syria (I will not stay there very long) and from Damascus go by bus to Beirut. Is this advisable? Is it safe to do this?

I know Cyprus Airways flies to Beirut twice daily, but its so expensive! I may get the ferry from Beirut to Limassol, its slightly cheaper.
